At Energy Network Services, sports lighting is about far more than installing fixtures. It’s about visibility, player safety, neighbourhood comfort, and meeting strict performance standards — all at the same time.
Over the past several years, ENS has completed a series of recreational and competitive sports lighting projects across Ontario and Atlantic Canada. From private athletic facilities to municipal courts and large indoor fields, each project required a tailored engineering approach and precise installation.
Here’s a look at three projects that reflect how our sports lighting expertise has evolved.
Abony Family Tennis Center – Facility Lighting Upgrade
Completed: March 2020

The Abony Family Tennis Center project marked one of ENS’s early large-scale sports lighting upgrades. The existing lighting system required modernization to meet USTA Class I standards — a performance level typically required for competitive play.
ENS began with a full analysis of the facility’s electrical load and lighting performance. After evaluating illumination levels and uniformity, our team redesigned and engineered a completely new lighting system.
We supplied and installed new high-efficiency LED fixtures and developed custom mounting brackets so the new lighting could integrate with the existing structure without requiring major structural modifications.
Key outcomes:
Lighting redesigned to meet USTA Class I requirements
Improved court visibility and uniformity
Reduced energy consumption and maintenance
Upgraded facility capable of hosting higher-level competition
This project established ENS’s ability to deliver precision lighting in performance-sensitive environments where glare, shadows, and uneven light distribution directly affect play.

BMO Soccer Centre – LED Lighting Upgrade
Completed: July 2022
The BMO Soccer Centre presented a different challenge — a large indoor field where lighting consistency is critical across a wide playing surface.
The existing system produced uneven illumination and darker areas on the field. ENS re-engineered the lighting layout to improve both brightness and uniformity. Our design brought the facility to an average of approximately 68 foot-candles (FC) across the playing surface while eliminating shadowed areas.
We supplied and installed all new LED fixtures, significantly improving player visibility and the spectator experience.
Key outcomes:
Consistent lighting across the entire field
Elimination of dark zones
Enhanced player safety and performance visibility
Reduced operational and maintenance costs
This project demonstrated ENS’s capability in large-span indoor sports facilities, where mounting heights, aiming angles, and photometric calculations are especially critical.
Doran Park Tennis Courts – Outdoor Court Lighting Installation
Completed: August 2025
Our most recent project with the Town of Springwater involved the design, supply, and installation of a brand-new exterior LED sports lighting system at Doran Park.
Unlike a retrofit, this project required a complete outdoor lighting design from the ground up. ENS engineered a system to meet a minimum of 30 foot-candles across all playable areas covering four tennis courts.
Because the courts are located near residential neighbourhoods, controlling light spill and glare was a key requirement. Our team carefully aimed and adjusted all luminaires to minimize light trespass while still meeting performance standards.
Key outcomes:
New lighting system for four tennis courts
Compliance with recreational play lighting levels
Minimized light spill to surrounding homes
Energy-efficient LED solution for the municipality
This project highlights ENS’s municipal capabilities, balancing athletic performance requirements with community considerations.
What These Projects Show
Across these three projects — private, institutional, and municipal — one theme remains consistent: sports lighting is engineering-driven.
Every facility requires:
Photometric analysis
Correct fixture selection
Precise aiming
Electrical load evaluation
Consideration of surrounding environments
When done properly, players don’t notice the lighting — and that’s the goal. They simply see the ball clearly, move safely, and enjoy the game.
